Common Questions About Allergy Testing and Allergy Drops

Allergy Testing
How long does the allergy test take?
Approximately 20 minutes.
How is the allergy testing performed?
By making small scratches on the forearms and upper arm using a plastic multitest applicator. This process is a lot quicker and less painful than the traditional intradermal allergy testing.
Is allergy testing covered by my insurance?
Allergy testing is covered by the majority of insurance companies. The cost can vary with type of insurance, depending on the copay, deductible, and coinsurance. The testing is pre-certified by our business office and the patient is given an estimate prior to the testing.
When will I get my results?
The results are typically reviewed with the patient by the ordering provider immediately after the testing is complete.
Allergy Drops
What allergies can be treated with allergy drops?
CornerStone Ear Nose & Throat is currently using allergy drops (sublingual immunotherapy) to treat allergies related to tree pollen, grasses, weeds, mold, dust mites, and animal dander.
How are the drops administered?
Patients take the drops each morning at home. The allergen extract is provided in bottles that have a dropper. Patients simply place drops under the tongue, hold them there for 2 minutes, then swallow.
What are the benefits of allergy drops versus allergy shots?
How long will it take before I start noticing improvement in my symptoms?
Results will vary from patient to patient, but most patients should start to notice gradual improvement in their symptoms between 6 months and 1 year after starting therapy.
How long will I need to take allergy drops?
Allergy immunotherapy is typically a 3-5-year treatment period. The discontinuation of immunotherapy would depend on the overall improvement of a patient's symptoms.
Are allergy drops covered by my insurance company?
Unfortunately, no. Allergy drops are an out-of-pocket cost of $125 per month or $1,250 for a full year.
Do you offer any other type of allergy treatment besides allergy drops?
Traditional allergy shots are available and are covered by most insurance plans.

What are the benefits of allergy drops versus allergy shots?
- Patients avoid the discomfort of allergy shots.
- There is less potential for systemic reactions.
- Allergy drops can be administered in the privacy and convenience of the patient’s home.
- Patients save time because there is no need to travel to the doctor’s office, receive an injection, and wait the 30-minute observation period required after allergy shots.
- Allergy drops are more convenient for people who live far from the doctor’s office, travel frequently or have a daily schedule that would make it difficult to receive weekly allergy shots.
